We rely on volunteers to help us provide legal support and advice to those who need it. We value all our volunteers and the contribution they make to the delivery of our services. We aim to nurture and develop all our volunteers to ensure that they benefit from their time with us – both in terms of job satisfaction and also in gaining new experiences and understanding legal casework. Whilst we work with all our volunteers to factor in their individual needs and interests, our volunteering opportunities fall broadly into the following categories: Reception/Admin volunteers and Specialist Casework volunteers:
We are always in need of more volunteers to cover our reception during office hours. The majority of our reception volunteers work one or two days a week. This role is suitable for somebody with some office experience and a willingness to learn. It is a great opportunity for somebody wishing to gain experience within a law centre environment. You will be the friendly face that meets and greets clients and must have an excellent telephone manner. The role will involve managing incoming calls and taking accurate messages, handling enquiries on the telephone and in person and booking appointments amongst other administrative duties. You will complete an initial screening of clients, assessing their eligibility for legal aid and taking down any details regarding their problems. You will also provide assistance to caseworkers with photocopying and other routine admin tasks as necessary. You will need to be computer literate, preferably using MS office applications and have good communication skills. A professional approach is essential. Training and supervision is provided.
Specialist Casework Volunteers
We are looking for volunteers with specialist training and experience in the areas of housing, immigration & asylum, employment and welfare benefits. The majority of our specialist legal volunteers are able to offer one to two days support. In return they get to work under the supervision of our very experienced solicitors and excellent experience for developing their careers.
For all our volunteering opportunities you need to be able to demonstrate that you are able to commit for at least one day a week for a minimum period of 6 months. If you are able to commit to this time frame and are interested in volunteering with North Kensington Law Centre, please send a CV and a brief explanation as to why you are interested by email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
If there are any suitable vacancies which match your experience & interest, we will then be in touch to invite you for an interview .
