ABOUT NKLC - FUTURE PLANS
The Law Centre is aware that there is still a high level of unmet need arising out of its casework which cuts across a range of legal issues. We will be exploring new funding opportunities to develop and expand our work in the following areas:
Domestic violence
Through our housing casework we have accumulated evidence of different legal issues arising from domestic violence which require coordinated intervention to support victims and their families.
Children and Young People
In recent years it has become obvious that there is a lack of adequate advice services tailored to the needs of young people. Young people often need legal advice when they leave school, move away from home, start working or become unemployed. We will investigate opportunities for funding from the borough's Connexions programme and other funding streams.
Community care and mental health
There are no community care or mental health providers in the borough creating a gap in services and a lack of access for people with mental health problems. Recent proposals to reform mental health legislation will adversely affect the legal rights and entitlements of those people identified as suffering from personality disorders. This will bring about the need for legal representation where challenges to the civil liberties of patients are required.
Employment support and migrant workers
Historically, Kensington and Chelsea has attracted a very high proportion of asylum seekers, refugees and migrants. Research has shown that these groups experience social exclusion through a failure to access services and economic opportunities. We are currently exploring funding to develop a migrant employment support service which will work with migrant communities to increase awareness of employment rights and support them in enforcing these rights. It will also build capacity in community groups so they can provide quality mark information, sign-posting and referral for their communities.
Pro bono work
The Law Centre currently operates a pro-bono scheme in partnership with Dechert, an international city law firm. Dechert have many years experience of delivering pro bono work and this is there fist experience of working with a law centre.
The service is aimed at local people and community groups who have legal issues which fall outside our traditional casework areas. It operates by appointment only and the areas of work offered are consumer and small claims, employment sessions for people who are not eligible for Legal Help assistance and media law.
