As much as possible, we aim to offer a free service. However, we work in an increasingly challenging funding environment, which we know is not ideal either for us or for you.
We will always tell you as quickly as possible if you qualify for Legal Aid funding. We are able to offer legally aided services funding in Crime, Prison Law, Housing and Asylum (and in some exceptional circumstances, immigration and employment). In welfare benefit cases, we do have some funding to help people free of charge.
If you do not qualify for legal aid, we will talk you through your options. In many circumstances we can offer a fixed fee or no win no fee services. These options provide you with a competitive alternative to visiting a private law firm.
If you have home or car insurance, your policy may provide legal expenses insurance (LEI) to cover our legal costs. During your first appointment, our caseworker can look at your policy to see whether our legal costs can be covered under your car or home insurance policy.
In other circumstances we may be able to signpost or refer you to another agency. Or you might find the support you need through one of our drop in sessions, either with one of our experienced volunteers or members of staff.
So please do contact us and find out more about what we can offer. We can assure you that a phone call or a visit to one of our drop ins will be a good start to helping you get the support you need.
How we are funded
Even with severe cuts to Legal Aid in recent years, we are able to continue our work at North Kensington Law Centre through a variety of different income streams:
Grants and Donations
We are grateful to all our current and recent funders who have enabled us to maintain our core services:
• The AB Charitable Trust
• Big Lottery through the Transition Fund
• City Bridge Trust
• Cabinet Office’s Local Sustainability Fund, delivered by Big Lottery Fund
• London Legal Support Trust
• Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea
• Trust for London
• Tudor Trust
We currently have contracts with the Legal Aid Agency in Housing, Asylum & Immigration, Crime and Prison Law which enable us to offer free representation to those who qualify.
Income from fixed fee and no win no fee work
Whilst our fee earning work currently only forms a small part of our overall income, we recognise that with the cuts in Legal Aid we will become more reliant on private work in the future if we want to continue to provide the level and quality of legal representation that our clients expect from a law centre.
Legal Expenses Insurance
This is an alternative funding option, available to clients who have the appropriate legal expenses insurance (LEI). If you have car and/or home insurance but do not know whether it covers your legal costs, contact us for a free policy review.
