Following extensive pressure applied by North Kensington Law Centre, the DWP and the Treasury have agreed that Grenfell survivors who receive the Voluntary Interim Payment will not see their eligibility for means-tested benefits affected.
The Voluntary Interim Payment scheme provides £12,500 to each household from Grenfell Tower for losses related to home contents. In addition, each household will receive a further £2,500 per child (up to two children, meaning the maximum that can be claimed is £17,500). Residents do not need to provide evidence of this, and will receive the payment irrespective of whether they had contents insurance or not.
This latest development means that residents can benefit from this scheme without having to worry about it affecting their benefits.
The Law Centre is contacting our clients from Grenfell Tower and Grenfell Walk regarding the Voluntary Interim Payment Scheme, answering the many questions we have been asked on the matter. Residents who want advice on this scheme should contact us so we can provide help, free of charge.
